Dog Training in Richmond

Richmond is flat, coastal and laced with dyke trails, which makes it one of the best places in the region to walk a dog and one of the most distracting. Lea Mestrovic offers positive reinforcement dog training across Richmond, in your home and on the trails and streets you use, or online.

In short

Richmond is flat, coastal and criss-crossed with dyke trails, and that shapes what its dogs need. The West Dyke and Steveston waterfront are perfect for loose-lead walking, but they are also full of birds, cyclists and other dogs on a narrow path, so leash manners and recall matter. In the City Centre around Brighouse it is high-rise living, with the elevator and lobby skills that come with it. Lea works with you at home and on the routes you use, or online, all reward-based with no prong collars, shock collars or corrections.

A flat city built for walking, with its own distractions

Richmond is unusually flat, and much of daily dog life happens on its dykes. The West Dyke Trail from Terra Nova down to Garry Point and Steveston is one of the best walking routes anywhere in the region, and the wider dyke system connects most of the city. That is a gift for training loose-lead walking, because you can walk in a straight line for as long as you like.

It comes with distractions, though. The dykes are shared with cyclists and joggers, often on a narrow path, and the waterfront is full of birds. Herons, ducks and geese are everywhere, and for a dog with any prey drive that is a strong pull, so recall and impulse control around wildlife are common things to work on here.

Richmond is also two kinds of place at once. Around Brighouse and the City Centre, high-rise towers mean elevators, lobbies and busy sidewalks, while Steveston, Seafair, Terra Nova and Broadmoor are quieter and more residential. A dog that moves between them needs to be comfortable in both.

How sessions work in Richmond

Sessions happen where your dog needs them. Lea comes to your Richmond home and local area for in-person training, from the City Centre and Brighouse to Steveston, Terra Nova and Seafair, or you can work together online. The plan fits your dog, your building or street, and the dykes and parks you use.

What we focus on depends on your dog: puppy training for a new arrival, reactive dog training for lunging or barking, help with anxiety and fear, or life skills like loose-lead walking and a recall that holds up around the birds on the dyke. Pricing is the same across Greater Vancouver, settled at the end of the first session.

Questions & answers

Common questions

Do you offer in-person dog training in Richmond?

Yes. Lea travels to your Richmond home and local area for in-person sessions, from the City Centre and Brighouse to Steveston, Terra Nova, Seafair and Broadmoor. Online sessions are also available.

My dog chases the birds on the dyke. Can that be trained?

Yes. Prey drive around the herons, ducks and geese on the waterfront is one of the most common Richmond issues. Reward-based training builds impulse control and a recall strong enough to call your dog off, though it takes consistency rather than a quick fix.

Where do sessions take place in Richmond?

Wherever your dog is most comfortable and where the challenges actually are, usually starting at home or your building, then moving to the dykes and parks you use, such as the West Dyke Trail or Garry Point, once your dog is ready.
